TODAY'S ZAMAN

  • Shifting responsibility
The outrage generated by the bombing raid that killed 34 people in Uludere on Dec. 28, 2011, is showing no sign of abating. Nothing can bring the victims, most of them teenagers, back to life, but the authorities could have prevented this tragic event from escalating into a crisis that has dragged on for nearly five months if they had swiftly taken responsibility and issued a heartfelt apology.

  • ‘Errorism’
Well, you could call it progress. Now, after nearly five months of beating around the bush, we are finally told that it was “some commanders” at the headquarters of the General Staff who were responsible for the decision. One night in late December, in the muddle of “intel” gathering, the erratic order to hit a large group of unarmed Kurdish gasoline smugglers by bombs near the Uludere-Roboski hamlet at the Iraqi border -- we are invited to believe -- was purely a military one.

  • ‘Strategic vision’
Zbigniew Brzezinski’s new book “Strategic Vision” has been translated into Turkish and published by TimaÅŸ Publications. I had the opportunity to follow a few discussions about it in the media. To better understand the role and ideas of Brzezinski in the drafting and implementation of US global policies and strategies, the process that started in the late 1970s in Afghanistan should be noted since he was the most important architect of that process. He was national security adviser to President Jimmy Carter when the president decided to extend support to the opponents of the Afghan regime, which Brzezinski knew could lead to a Soviet occupation.

  • Turkey through Amnesty International’s eyes
Amnesty International (AI) released its annual report, “Amnesty International Report 2012,” yesterday. I read the section of this report on Turkey quite carefully.

  • Uludere in all its urgency…
We lost 34 of our own citizens as the result of Turkish jets bombing the Turkish-Iraqi border area in Şırnak's Uludere on the night of Dec. 28, 2011. In a column I wrote six days after the incident, I said: “What we face here is a huge disaster, a terrible tragedy.

  • Anatomy of a deadlock
The most important legacy of the Ottoman state is its ability to ensure the survival and sustenance of a multicultural society in a way that lets these cultures remain autonomous. This experience, which bears a great deal of importance for the resolution of the Kurdish issue, leads the Sunni community, once placed at the top of the social hierarchy in the Ottoman Empire, to assume a role in addressing this problem.

  • Recovery of Turkey's foreign direct investment accelerates (2)
Although the prospect of joining the EU in the foreseeable future, which had contributed to Turkey's inward foreign direct investment (IFDI) surge before the global crisis, is now dim, the country's emergence as a regional power, and in particular its rising profile and growing prestige in the Middle East, has enhanced its attractiveness as a major host country for foreign direct investment (FDI). Turkey's rapid and strong economic recovery from the global crisis, as well as its enduring political stability under the leadership of the pro-FDI Justice and Development Party (AK Party), has further stimulated IFDI.

  • Time is against them
In Turkey the Western idea of support groups for the community is relative new, and there is room for development in this area.

  • The schizophrenic stance on the PKK
Amid mounting controversy over which state authority gave the strike order that led to the killing of 34 smugglers by military jets last year in Şırnak’s Uludere district after mistaking them for Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorists, Interior Minister İdris Naim Åžahin stoked the fires of the controversy on Wednesday when he criticized the local people of Uludere, saying the civilians who were killed in the airstrike were smuggling goods from neighboring Iraq when they were attacked.
