TODAY'S ZAMAN :: Op-Ed
TODAY'S ZAMAN

  • Reaching political ends through legal steps
At the beginning of my article, I would like to draw attention to a serious sorrow I suffered back in 2006, when I lost two brothers and one sister in three separate assassinations. It was certain that not only contract killers but also some political motives were involved in these murders. More importantly, I received letters from unknown senders after my brother Mahmud, who was an engineer, and my sister Mu'mina were assassinated. In sum, these letters said:

  • Tea Party victory, global defeat
CANBERRA -- You wouldn't expect much interest beyond the United States, or even beyond his own state, when an 80-year-old conservative legislator, who has already served six terms, loses his party's endorsement to run yet again. But the crushing defeat of Senator Richard Lugar in the recent Indiana Republican primary, in a Tea Party-supported campaign of shocking mindlessness, has reverberated in capitals around the world, including my own.

  • Being blind and deaf to Azerbaijan
The title of this article is a reproach to the impotence and double standard of the present-day modern world.

  • Turkey through Amnesty International’s eyes
Amnesty International (AI) released its annual report, “Amnesty International Report 2012,” yesterday. I read the section of this report on Turkey quite carefully.

  • Serbia chose the past by Hajrudin Somun*
“Serbia chose the past” is, unfortunately, an outcome of the Serbian presidential elections that I envisaged a month ago on this very page in the article “Serbia makes choice between past and future.”

  • Tweeting to Havana
HAVANA -- I was taking my usual morning swim, but this time on the roof of the Parque Central hotel in Havana, where the sun does not rise until 6.30 a.m. even in May. In the dim light, I saw a man poolside. He told me that the pool opened at nine. I apologized. He shrugged and let me stay.

  • The Nixon option for Iran?
WASHINGTON, DC -- Rearranging the deck chairs would not have saved the Titanic. Nor did the endless debates on the shape of the table in the Vietnam negotiations advance the effort to end that malign conflict. Nevertheless, many American presidents have successfully redesigned talks with adversaries in bold new ways to strengthen national security without war. Such boldness is now needed in the negotiations over Iran's nuclear program.

  • Lebanon between Shiite crescent and Sunni full moon by Ceren Kenar*
“If you have a beard and are a Shiite in Lebanon, you are an honest resister; but if you have a beard and are a Sunni, then you are a fundamentalist terrorist.”

  • Implications of Kurdish Hizbullah’s planned demonstration on May 27
In recent years the Kurdish Hizbullah (KH) have organized public events to celebrate Prophet Muhammad’s birthday. Hundreds of thousands of people attend these events each year.

  • Turkey’s New Course by Abdullah Gül*
CHICAGO – Turkey has recently been at the forefront of international economic and political debates. On the one hand, despite the economic crisis engulfing neighboring Europe, Turkey remains the world’s second-fastest growing economy, after China.

  • Legality of austerity memorandum imposed on Greeceby Alper Ali Rıza*
A few years ago relations between Turkey and Greece improved dramatically overnight on account of the response of the two peoples to catastrophic earthquakes that struck both countries in quick succession.

  • Mr. Öcalan!
The Turkish media long had a habit of talking like state institutions in the news and in the comments they presented.

  • Living languages and the politicization of Kurdish by Engin Gülbey*
It had been only four years since the transition to the Latin alphabet in Turkey. It was a state of mobilization and transition; the people were unable to adapt to the new alphabet and former scholars were trying to learn Latin letters as though they were new students.

  • How timely the WSJ story is! by AydoÄŸan VatandaÅŸ*
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) about the Uludere incident, in which the Turkish Air Forces mistakenly killed 34 Kurdish civilians on Dec. 21, 2011, has raised new questions about the sources of the intelligence used for the military strike.

  • Is the constitutional preparation sufficient for a presidency? by Levent Köker*
Discussions surrounding the presidential system, which from time to time have found their way into the topics of discussion in Turkish politics, have once again come into the spotlight, albeit in different dimensions and with a stronger emphasis.

  • German militarism’s connivance with Committee of Union and Progress by Ümit KardaÅŸ*
Wolfgang Gust, the foreign news chief of Der Spiegel and the editor of Spiegel-Buch, and his wife, Sigrid Gust, have worked on the German Foreign Ministry’s political archives concerning the disaster and massacre Armenians suffered in 1915 and 1916.

  • Domestic bliss
My husband returned today from his travels/tour leading in the more interesting parts of Turkey -- the East -- and is just beginning his round of the house.

  • A green alternative to austerity?
OXFORD –- While austerity in Europe faces increasing social resistance, in principle it has the merit of simplicity.

  • Greece must exit
NEW YORK -– The Greek euro tragedy is reaching its final act: I it is clear that either this year or next, Greece is highly likely to default on its debt and exit the eurozone.

  • A breakthrough opportunity for global health
NEW YORK – Every year, millions of people die from preventable and treatable diseases, especially in poor countries. In many cases, lifesaving medicines can be cheaply mass-produced, but are sold at prices that block access to those who need them. And many die simply because there are no cures or vaccines, because so little of the world's valuable research talent and limited resources is devoted to addressing the diseases of the poor.
